The US space shuttle Endeavour lifted off at 2:28 A.M. EDT (0628 GMT) Tuesday from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA TV reported.

During the rare nighttime launch, the shuttle rocketed into the night sky and lit the predawn sky ablaze, bringing an "artificial sunrise". It is the second shuttle launch in darkness since the 2003 Columbia disaster.
