Zimbabwean opposition announces pullout
Adjust font size:

Zimbabwe's opposition MDC announced on Tuesday it was pulling out of the presidential runoff scheduled for June 27, but the election body said they have not received the letter so far, local media reported on Tuesday.

According to some media reports, the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has officially pulled out of this week's presidential run-off.

The party hand-delivered a letter to the country's electoral commission on Tuesday, saying that they were withdrawing from the runoff.

MDC spokesman Nelson Chamisa said, "The letter was delivered this afternoon to the ZEC ... It was very clear and well articulated stating our position that we have withdrawn from the run-off."

However, in an telephone interview with newspaper The Herald, Justice George Chiweshe, chairman of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), said they have not yet receive the letter.
