Model soldier Lei Feng, characterized as a selfless and modest figure that was devoted to serving the people, has become a cultural icon representing selflessness, altruism and dedication in present-day China. On March 5, 1963, Chairman Mao Zedong started the "Learn from Comrade Lei Feng" campaign by calling upon the nation to carry on Lei Feng's spirits.
