Maowusu Desert: transforming the desert into a lush oasis

A photo taken on Sept. 17, 2020, shows Hongshixia Psammophyte Botanical Garden of the Desert Control Research Institute of Shaanxi Province, located in Yulin, Shaanxi province, China. The Maowusu Desert covers an area of 24,000 square kilometers in Shaanxi province. In 1974, a pioneering aerial seeding technology was adopted by the Desert Control Research Institute of Shaanxi Province and started to be applied across the country. Now in Yulin, vegetation cover percentage has increased from 1.8% in 1950s to 34.8% in 2020. [Photo by Wang Yiming/China.org.cn]
