Yuan Dongping was born in Guangzhou in 1956 and served in the navy from 1976 to 1980. He graduated as a history major from Beijing Normal University in 1984 and is now a picture editor for Nationality Pictorial magazine.
"Mental Hospital—A Forgotten Corner" won a prize for excellence at the Picture of Year (POY) in the U.S. in 1993. The collection "Mental Hospital" was influential in both photography and fine art circles and was described as "full of warmth and humanity". Critics regard it as a profound work. The photographer uses a unique camera language to communicate intense visual power to the viewer. (Curator: Zeng Huang)
