Washington Wizards NBA guard Gilbert Arenas said on Monday that he should not have taken his guns out as a joke on his teammates.

The Wizards guard met with federal prosecutors on Monday to explain why he stored several guns in his Verizon Center locker room and took them out on Dec. 21.

Arenas insisted the guns were unloaded.

"I had kept the four unloaded handguns in my house in Virginia, but then moved them over to my locker at the Verizon Center to keep them away from my young kids," Arenas said in a statement.

Arenas said he believed it was legal to store the guns in the District of Columbia. He said he took the guns out of his locker "in a misguided effort to play a joke on a teammate."

He admitted what he did was wrong and no such thing as joking when it came to guns.

No charges have been filed against the three-time NBA All-Star.
