Wrestling

As a sport of long history, Wrestling had been in the ancient Olympic Games since 708 BC. Greco-Roman wrestling was introduced in the first Modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. In 1904, freestyle wrestling became the Olympic discipline in the St. Louis Games. With the development and popularity of women’s wrestling, female wrestling was recognized in Athens Games in 2004. Wrestling became an official sport since the 2nd Asian Games in Manila, 1954.

Wrestling in the Asian Games consists of three events, Greco-Roman, Freestyle, and Female wrestling. In Greco-Roman, wrestlers can only hold the opponent’s body above the waist, while use of legs is forbidden. In Freestyle, wrestlers can use the technique of Greco-Roman wrestling and that of using legs to trip and grasp the lower limbs.

The mat must be approved by FILA for the wrestling competition. The mat is made from high resilient sponge, with a thickness of 6-8cm. The competition area is inside a circle of 9m in diameter. Outside the competition area is the protection area with 1.5m in width. The competition starts from the red circle (10cm wide) of 1m in diameter in the middle of the mat.

The duration of the bouts for the wrestlers in the senior age category is set as three periods of two minutes, with a 30-second break in between. The wrestler winning two periods is declared the match winner. The best way to win in international wrestling is "par terre"- completely lifts the opponent off the ground. The wrestler will be awarded 1-5 technical points by the judge according to the holds and actions successfully executed.
