U.S. names preliminary World Cup squad

Charlie Davies failed to make the U. S. World Cup team seven months after he was nearly killed in a road accident on Tuesday when the U.S. announced preliminary 30- man squad.

"Charlie has shown so much heart in his work to get back from his injuries," US coach Bob Bradley said as he announced the squad on a live television broadcast.

"We've monitored all his workouts. We've had people there. We' ve observed him and he remained part of the consideration right up until yesterday."

The team is to gather next week for training camp and Bradley will select his final 23-man squad for the finals in South Africa before the Americans depart on May 30.

The US are drawn in Group C with England, Slovenia and Algeria. They will open their campaign against England on June 12.

Following is the squad:
