For two consecutive Olympic Games, the American shooter lost gold medals on the last shots.

At the Athens Olympics, Emmons fired at the wrong target with his final shot, a shocking mistake that cost the American a commanding lead in the Olympic 50-meter three-position rifle final and ruined his chance of a second gold medal.

Four years later in Beijing, in the same event, Emmons extended his lead to 3.3 points after 9 shots. Then, in a shocking turn of events, his 3.3 point lead vanished when he posted a 4.4 on his final shot. He finished off the podium in 4th place.

"I didn't feel my finger shaking, but I guess it was," Emmons told reporters. "I call it a freak of nature. I felt normal in this match, a little bit more nervous."
