AS Roma's Francesco Totti reacts after he failed to score on a penalty kick during their Serie A soccer match between AS Roma and Juventus in Rome's Olympic stadium on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011.

Roma captain Francesco Totti says he will not leave the Serie A club despite admitting it had been a possibility.

Totti had said he had been thinking of quitting and would do so if he continued to be a target of the fans' abuse. But Totti now says "the Roma fans insulted me but I was misunderstood. I'm staying here."

Totti had a penalty saved by Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon in Monday's 1-1 draw for which he was heavily criticized. The 35-year-old Italian has spent his entire career at Roma and made his debut in 1992.
