Front runners Bayern Munich came from behind to carve out a hard earned 3-2 win over newly promoted Dusseldorf thanks to the late winner by Jerome Boateng on Saturday.

Schalke edged off local rivals Dortmund 2-1 in a seesaw match.

Everyone expected Bayern Munich to trash Dusseldorf 5-0 for the second time this season but things turned to be more difficult than expected.

The visitors shocked the German record champions with only 16 minutes into the match when Mathis Bolly utilized a header by Andreas Lambertz inside the box to beat Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer with a volley.

The hosts seemed dazed by opener, as they were unable to find an answer against courageous Dusseldorf.

As the match progressed Bayern recovered from the shock and pressed Dusseldorf into defense to approach the visitor's goal with a couple of opportunities through Daniel van Buyten, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Mueller.

It was only a matter of time before the Bavarians restored parity, at the dying minutes of the first half through Thomas Mueller.

Mueller made use of a pass by Phillip Lahm to slot home into the far post corner.

The visitors started unfazed into the second half when they were able to take the lead for the second time. Dusseldorf caught the hosts flat footed when Lambertz finished a counter attack from inside the box into the near post corner at the 71st minute.

Bayern Munich prevented themselves from an awkward loss when Frenchmen Franck Ribery made it 2-2 two minutes later following an assist by substitute Claudio Pizzaro. They still were not done with the scoring as Jerome Boateng secured the 3-2 win when he headed home the winner four minutes before the final whistle.

Bayern consolidates their first position with 66 points whilst Dusseldorf slump to 15th position with 28 points.

Borussia Dortmund suffered a setback in the hunt of Bayern Munich when they lost 2-1 at the 142nd "Revierderby".

Schalke's youngster Julian Draxler made his 100th appearance for the "Royal Blues" and he started sensationally when he broke the deadlock at the 11th minute. Asuto Uchida had set up for Draxler who netted from inside the box to give his side the lead.

The defending champions responded to the opener but yet their actions in front of Schalke's goal remained short on accuracy.

The hosts lurked to extend their lead but Dortmund's Mario Goetze scratched a header by Joel Matip from the line while Roman Weidenfeller denied Draxler his brace in a one on one situation minutes later.

The hosts finally doubled the lead as Uchidas cross into the box found Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who had no problems to head past Weidenfeller at the 36th minute.

With beginning of the second half Dortmund increased the pressure on Schalkes defense. The visitor's efforts and determination were rewarded at the 59th minute when Bundesliga top scorer Robert Lewandowski marked his 17th goal of the season when he overcame Timo Hildebrandt in a one on one situation.

Dortmund frantically pressed for the equalizer whereas Schalke protected the lead to the end. Nonetheless both sides squandered a bunch of scoring opportunities in the closing period.

The Schalkes jump from six to fourth position with 39 points whilst Dortmund stay on second position, 20 points adrift of Bayern Munich.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg pulled back to humiliated Freiburg 5-2 owing to the brace by Ivica Olic. Leverkusen lost to 1-0 to Mainz to miss the chance to take over second position in the standings. Hoffenheim grabbed a 3-0 win over newly promoted Greuther Fuerth at the relegation battle and Monchengladbach and Bremen share points following a 1-1 draw.

Already on Friday, Nuremberg defeated relegation threatened Augsburg 2-1.

On Sunday, Hannover host Frankfurt and Stuttgart encounter Hamburg.
