Jordan beat Japan 65-56 to reach the quarterfinals in the 27th Asian Men's Basketball Championship on Wednesday.

Both teams entered the match with 1-3 records in Group E. The victory put 2011 runner-up Jordan at 2-3, while Japan sank to 1-4 and will join Hong Kong, China into the classification round for 9th to 12th place.

Jimmy Baxter and Mohammad Shaher Hussein helped Jordan pull away in the third quarter, to establish some distance between the two teams.

Baxter top-scored for both teams with 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting. He also came up with six rebounds and three steals. Hussein added 15 and 19 rebounds, while Ahmad Alhamarsheh finished with 10 points and six boards.

The victory makes it the sixth straight time Jordan will compete in the quarter-finals round, drawing title-favorite Iran in the knockout stage, which will be a rematch of the 2011 quarter-finals. In that game, Jordan defeated Iran 88-84.
