Unseeded Venus Williams of the United States toppled No. 12-seeded Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 6-2 at the first round of 2013 U.S. Open on Monday.

Even after the former world number one won the first set 6-1, Flipkens was a dangerous opponent for Venus as the Belgian once came back from a 0-6 first set to beat Venus 2-1 in Toronto Rogers Cup several weeks ago.

Venus refused to let that happen again. The seven-time Grand Slam winner found her own way of winning a match when the score got to 2-2 in the second set, clinching four straight games to take the victory.

"In Toronto I started out really strong and it didn't end up as well as I would have liked," said Williams. "But my serve was a lot better today. In Toronto I wasn't really feeling that great about my serve."

Venus would meet Chinese veteran Zheng Jie in the second round. Zheng beat Kiki Bertens from the Netherlands 6-1, 6-3 in a later match. The two's only meeting was nine years ago when Venus beat Zheng.
