Ding Junhui stepped up his bid to equal the record for the most ranking title won in one season, beating Jamie Cope 4-1 at the Welsh Open.

Ding won the German Masters earlier this month and needs one more ranking title this season to equal the record of five set by Stephen Hendry in 1990/91.

The Chinese ace took the opening frame with a break of 108 but Stoke potter Cope hit back to level with a run of 69. Ding won the third with a superb 52 clearance to regain the lead and showed composure to take frames four and five to secure his passage to last the 32.

"I started well with a century but after that I missed some positions after playing some bad shots," said 2012 Welsh Open champion Ding. "I was keeping my mind 100 per cent on the game. It is always going to be difficult, but I am happy to play and give my all."

China's Liang Wenbo impressed as he made breaks of 56, 113, 50 and 113 during his 4-0 whitewash of Fergal O'Brien while Nottingham cueist Anthony Hamilton scored a 4-1 defeat of Li Hang.
