Ding leads Wasley 6-3 after the opening session of his first round match. |
China's snooker ace Ding Junhui finished the opening session of his first round match at the snooker World Championship strongly to lead Crucible debutant Michael Wasley 6-3 overnight.
While qualifier Xiao Guodong lost an exciting battle 10-8 to two-time world finalist Ali Carter in the snooker World Championship on Sunday.
Ding, who has already won five ranking titles this season, claimed the opener following a safety battle on the green but Wasley came back fighting in his first appearance.
The venue has often caused newcomers to freeze under the pressure but that didn't seem an issue for the Gloucester man as he went 2-1 ahead with breaks of 63 and 38.
Ding replied with a run of 70 to level at 2-2 at the break but Wasley edged ahead again by taking frame five on the colours.
Ding took a nervy 39 minute frame six after both players missed chances on the brown. That proved the turning point as Ding knocked in a superb 136 total clearance - the highest break of the tournament so far - to go 4-3 ahead. The Sheffield-based man then took the eighth with a run of 65 before clinching the ninth in several visits.
The match will be concluded from 2:30pm on Monday.
