China's Ding Junhui in action against Jack Lisowski of England during their first-round match at the Shanghai Masters last night.

Judd Trump, Ronnie O'Sullivan, John Higgins and Barry Hawkins were among the first round casualties at the Shanghai Masters while home favourite Ding Junhui eased into the last 16.

Five-time World Champion O'Sullivan crashed out in shocking style, losing 5-3 to Alan McManus in what was his first ranking event tournament of the season.

There were only flashes of brilliance from the Rocket - notably a 139 total clearance in the third frame - and it was Glasgow's 43-year-old McManus who dominated the latter stages, winning the last three frames from 3-2 down.

John Higgins and Barry Hawkins also suffered first round exits, losing 5-4 to Ryan Day and Mark Williams respectively.

Defending champion Ding Junhui made a strong start with a 5-1 victory over Jack Lisowski, knocking in breaks of 128 and 67.

"I was a bit nervous at the beginning as I haven't played in major ranking events for some time, so I wasn't used to the conditions. Even after two or three frames I wasn't feeling comfortable. For no reason, after the interval I suddenly began to cue well." said Ding.

"So many top players have lost and I might just be the next one. After all, I have to concentrate on my own game and matches."
