"My father is Li Gang" rose to fame overnight on the Internet in China after a 22-year-old drunk driver reportedly shouted the phrase when a crowd stopped his car.
First of all, one may ask, "Who is Li Gang?" He is a high-ranking police officer in Hebei Province.
On October 16th, a black Volkswagen Magotan struck two university students at Hebei University, killing one and seriously injuring the other (fracturing their legs). The drunk driver escaped the scene and continued to drive to a female dormitory to drop off his girlfriend. When he was finally arrested by school security guards at the university's front gate and surrounded by students, he shouted, "Go ahead and sue me, my father is Li Gang!"
Many netizens were stunned by his arrogance after the accident which sparked outrage on Chinese Internet forums. The outrage led to the discovery that revealed Li Gang to be the deputy director of the local public security bureau.
An online poetry contest, launched by popular bulletin board system MOP, in which writers create new poems by fusing classical Chinese poems with the sentence "My father is Li Gang" received hundreds of submissions.
The phrase has since become a popular internet catchphrase and meme within China and is frequently seen in various forums and on message boards.
