132,000 Shanghai residents, or one in 175, has a personal wealth of over 10 million yuan ($ 1.54 million USD) this year. The figure marks an increase of 8.2 percent compared with last year.
Among these richest people, the number of yuan billionaires in Shanghai is 350 and 109 of them has their assets well and transparently documented, according to the Hurun Shanghai Wealth Report 2011.
The report, which tracks assets of those who are headquartered or currently residing in Shanghai, attributes the rise in personal wealth to Shanghai's booming real estate, finance, and investment products sectors. The ratio of rich people working in these industries is higher than the national average, the report said.
In addition, more women rank among Shanghai's richest people than in other parts of China. However, many of these women are not native to Shanghai, with a considerable portion originating from neighboring Zhejiang province.
At age 31, basketball star Yao Ming is the youngest member of yuan billionaires in Shanghai with a wealth of 1 billion yuan.
