Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), founded on Nov. 1, 1949, is the highest academic institution in natural science and the supreme scientific and technological advisory body for the Chinese government. Today, CAS has 12 branch offices and 117 institutes, which are located in 20 provinces and municipalities throughout China. The institution is divided into four areas: basic research, life sciences and biotechnology, resources and the environment, and high technology. It also has one university (the University of Science and Technology of China at Hefei, Anhui) and one graduate school (the Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), with over 50,000 staff.
