California Institute of Technology has been ranked the world's best university for 2011-2012 in a list published in the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine in early October. It is the first time that CIT has outranked Harvard University on the list, as the latter slipped to joint-second with Stanford after having topped the list since 2004.

In order to capture the full range of university activities across the globe, the rankings employ 13 separate performance indicators which are grouped into five headline categories: teaching — the learning environment (worth 30 percent of the overall ranking score), research — volume, income and reputation (worth 30 percent), citations — research influence (worth 30 percent), industry income — innovation (worth 2.5 percent) and international outlook — staff, students and research (worth 7.5 percent).

In this year's rankings, U.S. universities continued to fare strongly, taking 14 of the top 20 spots and 75 of the top 200. Outside the U.S., UK universities had the most top 200 successes with 32, followed by the Netherlands and Germany with 12 each, and Canada with nine.

The top 5 Asian universities this time include: University of Tokyo, Japan (30th), University of Hong Kong, China (34th), National University of Singapore (40th), Peking University, China (49th), and Kyoto University, Japan (52nd).

China has eight universities in the top 200 this year, with three from the mainland, four from Hong Kong and one from Taiwan. Among the three mainland universities, Peking University ranks highest, taking 49th spot, followed by Tsinghua University (71st) and the University of Science and Technology of China (192nd).
