Founded in 1954 and originally called Shanghai Teachers Training College, Shanghai Normal University got its current name in 1994 after several previous rebrandings and mergers.

The university now has two campuses, Xuhui and Fengxian, covering a total area of 166.67 hectares. As one of Shanghai's key universities, it is a comprehensive university, offering teacher training and other disciplines such as liberal arts.

The university boasts 84 undergraduate majors, 104 disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 22 for doctoral degrees, and six for post-doctoral degrees. It has 2,918 teaching staff, 533 of whom are associate professors or above. More than 140,000 students have graduated from the university to date. As many as 70 percent of primary and middle school teachers and 70 percent of middle school headmasters in Shanghai are graduates of Shanghai Normal University.

The university has established cooperative relations with more than 228 universities and academic institutions in 32 countries and regions. Joint education programs with the US, UK, Germany and France have also been signed. Currently, there are 823 foreign students studying at the university. It has also founded three Confucius Institutes in Japan, Botswana and the US.
