Russia was the 9th largest consumer of gold in the world in 2011. The country's total demand increased by 14 percent from 66 tonnes in 2010 to 75.1 tonnes in 2011. Jewelry consumption continued its growth to thrive the gold market despite the rising price. However, there was an increasing demand for lighter pieces due to the soaring gold price. Russia was the world's 4th biggest gold producer in 2011, outputting 200 tonnes of gold in 2011, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
