According to this year's ranking, Karamay from Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region became the richest city in China last year, followed by Dongguan from Guangdong and Suzhou from Jiangsu.

However, mega cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen all surprisingly failed to enter the list.

Among the 20 spots, six of them are located in Zhejiang and four are from Guangdong. Jiangsu and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region each take three places, and Shandong wins two. The remaining two positions are occupied by Xinjiang and Shanxi respectively.

China County-level Economy Research Institute was established in 1998 and began releasing the Wealthiest Cities Ranking in 2009.
