As an emerging market, China performed very well on this year's top banks list. Four out of the top 10 banks are Chinese, according to the Top 1000 World Bank Ranking 2012, released by The Banker, the world's premier banking and finance magazine, on July 2, 2012.

The Bank of America, with its tier one capital of US$159,232 million, still occupies the top spot on the list. ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China) ranked third, with a capital of US$140,027 million, up 3 places compared to its number six spot in 2011.

The Banker has released a world bank ranking since 1970.
