Chinese badminton player Wang Xin had to withdraw from her bronze medal match against Indian opponent Saina Nehwal after winning the first set. During the second set, Wang asked the referee to have the sweat on the floor wiped off, but the referee suspected that Wang intentionally tried to delay the match, so he refused. Wang subsequently slipped and was badly injured when trying to return a net shot. Wang's withdrawal gave India their first Olympic medalist in the badminton event.

Chinese badminton head coach Li Yongbo accused Danish referee Torsten Berg of causing Wang's injury. He claimed that when there is sweat on the floor, the referee should have it wiped off or allow the player to clean the floor.

Wang was in a great deal of pain and sent to hospital for an NMR exam. She was diagnosed with an acute tear of the cruciate ligaments.
