 Shin A-Lam in women's epee

In the women's epee event, South Korea's athlete Shin A-Lam lost 5:6 after a chaotic end to her semifinal against Germany's Britta Heidemann. Shin thought she was through to the final, but the clock was then reset from zero to one second, just as Heidemann scored a do-or-die hit. Shin sat tearfully on the fencing strip, awaiting a decision for one whole hour. She lost her match for the bronze medal as well.

The International Fencing Federation has announced that Shin will receive "a special medal" for the "aspiration to win and respecting the rules." However, this didn't help make Shin feel any as it's not an Olympic medal. She didn't accept the result because she believed it was a mistake.
