Pollutant: Mainly Chromium

Population affected: 160,000+

Site description:

Nearly 90 percent of the 270 registered tanneries in Bangladesh are located on the 25-hectare land in the capital Dacca. These factories dump 22,000 cubic liters of toxic waste, including cancer-inducing chromium, into the Burigangam River every day. What makes matters even worse is that at least 185,000 people are living around the river.
