Dubbed the "Japanese Amazon," Rakuten bought Viber for US$900 million in February. It also invested US$100 million in its start-up companies in the Asia-Pacific region, Israel and the United States. Rakuten also established a strategic partnership with Air Asia, a Malaysian budget airline, in order to promote its online retail business.
