The Mori Memorial Foundation’s Institute for Urban Strategies, a Japanese research institute, has published its Global Power City Index (GPCI) 2015 report, which ranks 40 global metropolises according to their “magnetism,” or comprehensive power to attract creative individuals and enterprises from all over the world and to mobilize their assets for economic, social and environmental development.

It considered six main functions representing city strength, including economy, research and development, cultural interaction, livability, environment and accessibility.

London has successfully defended its title since 2012, with all functions ranking within the top three except livability and environment. The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and other major cultural and sporting events have helped the city improve its overall magnetism.

New York is second, followed by Paris. Hong Kong is the highest-ranking Chinese city, coming in seventh place. Another three Chinese cities, Shanghai, Beijing and Taipei, rank 17th, 18th and 32nd respectively.
