The latest World Happiness Report has been released jointly by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations and University of British Columbia.

As a landmark survey on the state of global happiness, the report aims to show the quality of human development using happiness and subjective well-being as its primary indicators. It ranks 156 countries from across the world.

Denmark is back to No. 1 after beat No. 2 Switzerland. Two other Northern Europe countries, Norway and Iceland, rank third and fourth.

Six factors were used in the survey, including GDP per capita, life expectancy, social support, trust, perceived freedom to make life decisions and generosity.

First published in 2012, this year’s report has for the first time given a special role to the measurement and consequences of inequality.
