The latest World Happiness Report has been released jointly by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations and the University of British Columbia.

As a landmark survey on the state of global happiness, the report aims to show the quality of human development using happiness and subjective well-being as its primary indicators. It ranks 156 countries from across the world.

Burundi – an agriculture and husbandry based country in East Africa and one of the least developed countries in the world – is ranked as the unhappiest country. Eight of the top 10 are in sub-Saharan Africa, while the remaining two in other regions, Syria and Afghanistan, are war-torn countries. The scores of the 10 countries are all below 3.7.

Six factors were used in the survey, including GDP per capita, healthy years of life expectancy, social support, trust, perceived freedom to make life decisions and generosity.

First published in 2012, the report this year has for the first time given a special role to the measurement and consequences of inequality.
