1. Distribution of sectors

The top 500 manufacturing companies represented some 37 sectors, similar to the past lists. The ferrous metal smelting and pressing companies outnumbered other companies on this year’s list again, with 84 making it to the list, or 16.80 percent of the list, despite a slight decline in the number compared with the previous year. Ferrous metal smelting and pressing companies have outnumbered other industries on the list for six years in a row, cementing its leading position on the list, despite a slight drop in number over the past four years due to frequent mergers and acquisitions.

In second to fifth place were manufacturing of electrical machinery, equipment, components and cables, nonferrous metal smelting and pressing, chemical raw materials and products, automobiles and automobile parts with 34, 32, 29 and 28 companies in the top 500. The top five sectors have a total of 207 companies on this year's list, accounting for 41.40 percent, whereas companies specializing in agricultural and forestry machinery, electronic office equipment and video equipment were the fewest on the list. Quite a few sectors had no company on the list at all. See Table 2-4 for more details.

 2. Profitability

Return on revenue (ROR) and return on equity (ROE) are two indicators of a company's profitability. The following is an analysis of the profitability of China's Top 500 manufacturing companies in terms of rate on return on revenue and return on equity.

The average ROR of the top 500 manufacturing companies was 3.97 percent, 0.75 percent higher than the previous year. Despite of a slight drop, alcoholic beverage sector had the highest ROR at 12.48 percent, followed by tobacco at 9.78 percent, slightly lower than the previous year. Besides, ROR of another 19 sectors was above 3.97 percent. Computer and components manufacturing sector's ROR was lowest at 1.62 percent.

The average return on equity of China's top manufacturing companies was 3.84 percent, down 0.24 percent from the previous year. Agricultural and forestry machinery equipment and component manufacturing companies boasted the highest return on equity at 18.74 percent, non-ferrous metal smelting and pressing companies were at the bottom with 1.42 percent. Twenty-three sectors' return on equity was over 3.84 percent.
