However, while technology today allows for amazing communication possibilities, Kara Elise Brouillette explains that for her first Christmas away, the distance feels very real even still.

"The hardest thing for me is not having my family here. Just the other day I met a big family who had flown in to see someone here in Beijing who's studying and I'm really disappointed that my family can't make it out here," she says after also explaining that it doesn't seem right to work on Christmas Eve.

It's not just about missing Mom's cooking or presents; it also has to do with living a separate life than your family does and sometimes not feeling a part of theirs. Christmas can be a bit isolating sometimes so being around close people here is absolutely crucial during the holidays.

In Beijing, the relationships you make with the people you meet are strong and you appreciate them more this time of year. This wondrous city called Beijing has brought you together; from all over China and all over the world, it has created another family for you in this city of ancient gates and modern lights. Merry Christmas!
