Inner Mongolia's Xilingol named 'Capital of Horses'

Inner Mongolia's Xilingol League, which boasts China's best grassland and breeds the Mongolian horse, was named as the "Chinese Capital of Horses" on Sunday.
At a press conference held in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China Horse Industry Association (CHIA) chairman Wu Changxin, who is also an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, awarded the title to Xilingol, one of 12 prefecture level divisions of Inner Mongolia.
Xilingol, China's best preserved grassland which covers an area of 202,580 square kilometers, borders Mongolia to the north, Chifeng, Tongliao and Hinggan League to the east, Ulanqab to the west and Hebei's Chengde and Zhangjiakou cities to the south.
Tourists to Xilingol can bunk down with a real Mongolian family in their guest yurt and enjoy activities such as horse riding, cow milking, goat shearing and hiking.
Xilingol is a main breeding ground for the Mongolian horse, one of the most important breeds found among the indigenous horses of China. It is a dual-purpose horse, used primarily for riding and carting, but is also used for meat and milk production.
Xilingol has held various horse events in recent years, including national barrel horse races and thoroughbred horse racing.
As the seat of government for the Xilingol League, Xilinhot is planning to build a horse trade center, an equestrian college, a horse museum, a highland horse track, an indoor equestrian center and a horse breeding center in the city.
