China to invest 600 mln in Chengde Mountain Resort

The Chinese government has decided to invest 600 million yuan over the next five years for the preservation of Chengde Mountain Resort and the temples in its vicinity.

The government will allocate 520 million yuan for the preservation of the main body of Chengde Mountain Resort and its temples; while 80 million yuan will be used for the preservation of water systems. The investment in 2010 will be in the region of 100 million yuan.

Initially established in 1703, Chengde Mountain Resort was one of the first batches of China's key cultural heritage sites to be put under state protection and it was inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage list in 1994.

In the period from 1976 to 2005, the Chinese government has invested more than 76 million yuan in the mountain resort.
