At the end of a long day at the Expo grounds or sightseeing in Shanghai, returning to the privacy of your apartment, where you don't have to get dressed up to go down to the lobby, certainly has its appeal.

"Privacy becomes more important the more you travel," said Van Doornmalen.

Other short-stay apartment locations include the River House on Suzhou Road South, near People's Square, with other options soon to be available in Shanghai's other central districts such as Gubei and Pudong New Area.

"Each apartment location has to be a little bit special," said Meyer zu Schlochtern. "If you have to be somewhere, be there for a reason."
