World Tourism Day, the annual festival celebrating tourists throughout the world, was held Monday. Centering on the theme of Biodiversity this year, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) designated China as the host country for the 2010 celebrations.

According to WTO, the theme of this year will provide a unique opportunity to raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity to tourism and the role of sustainable ecotourism.

"Safeguarding biodiversity is an urgent challenge that concerns us all, but it is not too late to act," said Taleb Rifai, the Secretary-General of WTO.

Representatives from 160 countries took part in the forum held in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, one of China's most important tourism provinces, to discuss the future development of the industry.
