Located at the Huanggai Peak on the southern slope of the Songshan Mountain, Henan Province, Zhongyue Temple is considered as the “Center of Taoist Activates of the Central Plains Region”. From the ancient times, Songshan Mountain was a sacred place for offering sacrifices and the Zhongyue Temple is one of the earliest bases for all the sacrifice activities in this region.

Zhongyue Temple was originally built during the Qin Dynasty, but was expanded by the Emperor Wudi (156-87BC) of the Western Han Dynasty. It has the height of 650 meters and is over 180 meters wide. It covers an area of more than 11.7 hectares.

The temple is the best preserved and the largest ancient building complex among the five most famous mountains in China. It consists of many historical and famous buildings, such as Yaocan Pavilon, Tianzhong Pavilion, Junji Hall, Imperial Library, Siyue Palace, and Shenzhou Palace.
