Located in Hunan province in the south of China, the Eastern Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve covers an area of 190,000 hectares. It is a crucial wetland reserve in both China and the world, protecting the ecosystem and the biotic resources of the Dongting Lake.

Eastern Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve is an important winter habitat for wetland birds. More than 300 species of birds inhabit the lake in the winter, totaling one million birds. There are seven kinds of first national protected animals and 37 kinds of second national protected animals. It attracts numerous birdwatchers every year.

The Dongting Lake is one of five fresh water lakes in China on the mainstream of the Yangtze River. Eastern Dongting Lake is the largest and best preserved component of the Dongting Lake.
