Peony

The peony is among the longest-used flowers in ornamental culture and is one of the creature national emblems in China. Along with the plum blossom, it is a traditional floral symbol of China. It is also known as "flower of riches and honor," and is used symbolically in Chinese art.

The legend of peony and the Empress Wu Zetian

Wu Zetian, the only woman empress in the history of China, has an interesting legend with the peony. The story goes like this: Once in the depths of a winter, Wu Zetian wrote a poem after being drunk. In the poem, she announced: "I will visit the garden tomorrow and all the flowers must open for my visit". The next day, all the flowers bloomed except the peony. Wu was boiling over with rage. She ordered peonies to be taken to Luoyang. However, peonies grew very well in Luoyang and attracted many people to admire.
