The Gansu Tourism Bureau recently announced a series of plans to integrate the existing travel resources in Jiuquan: in a bid to boost the province's tourism market.

According to the Five-year Jiuquan Tourism Development Plan, Jiuqian — home of China's first and largest satellite launch center — is planning to build three feature scenic zones for tourists, namely "Dunhuang Culture," "Space Science and Technology," and "Scenic and Energy". This is aimed at integrating its cultural, scientific, and folkloric resources to develop its travel sector.

The planned space technology themed travel project will feature background information on the Shenzhou spacecraft and the Chang'e No. 1 moon probe satellite.

Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center was founded in 1958, and is the country's first of three spaceports. Its first manned space mission was Shenzhou 5 on October 15, 2003.
