Located about 40 kilometers east of Turpan City in Xinjiang Autonomous Region, Gaochang (高昌故城) was first built during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) and then passed through the Han, Wei and Jin dynasties.

The present remains of Gaochang City were built during the Tang Dynasty (618AD-907AD). The outer city was well preserved, which had a wall base 12 meters thick, 11.5 meters high, and a perimeter of 5.4 kilometers. The inner city was built in the center of the outer city, with well-preserved west and south walls. In addition, a small square fortress called Khan Fortress stands in the center of the northern inner city.
