Located to the south of Lindong Town of Baarin Left Banner in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Shangjing City (辽上京遗址) was first built 918AD. It consists of two parts: an imperial city area and a Han city area. The city wall was made of tampered earth with a perimeter of 6,400 meters.

The imperial region stands in the north of the city and was designed for military defense. Official bureaus, Buddhist temples and workshops were constructed to the east and southeast of the imperial palace. The Han city area is located in the south of the city, where the ethnic Han, Bohai and Huihu ethnic groups built their homes. Various kinds of relics were unearthed in the Han City area, including coarse white porcelain, tri-colored glazed pottery and cow-leg bottles. Shangjing has provided concrete evidence for the systematic study of the construction of Liao cities.
