Gulangyu is also known as the "Piano Island" as it is the home of Cai Lixia, a famous pianist who was blinded in a medical mishap when she was a child. She still plays piano in the local church. The island is also popular with other pianists, and it's not uncommon to hear pianos being played in homes as one walks around the island.
