Shanghai Disney Resort hasn't even been built and it's already scooped up an award.

The American Institute of Architects today presented Walt Disney Imagineering with its Architectural Practice Award for its use of building information modeling on the Enchanted Storybook Castle, designed to be the world's tallest and largest Disney castle.

Building information modeling is the process of generating and managing digital representations of structures and facilities.

"It would be hard to imagine designing and building such a complex structure without having one integrated, central, smart model like building information modeling," said Howard Brown, senior vice president and project development executive, Walt Disney Imagineering Shanghai.

The Enchanted Storybook Castle will be the centerpiece of Shanghai Disney Resort and workers today sank the first pile into the ground for the castle's foundations.

The castle will combine performances, restaurants and other entertainment. Its winding staircase will lead visitors on what Disney is calling a memorable "Once Upon a Time Adventure."
