Guangzhou kicks off international food festival

Guangzhou has held an international food festival every year since 1987, and there is even a Chinese saying “Eating in Guangzhou”.

This year the festival kicked off in Panyu on November 25. There were 218 booths covering more than 30,000 square meters. The 10-day event gathered famous dishes from around China, and delicacies from several foreign countries.

Visitors can savor domestic famous dishes and desserts. Featured foods include Guangdong rice noodle rolls, Peking roast duck, Shanghai steamed buns, Shanxi sliced noodles, Wuhan hot noodles, fried rice cake with portunid, ginger milk pudding and more.

Guangzhou Panyu Hotel launched the most attractive snack, Pajinshan, a traditional Panyu food made of dace, a type of fish that lives in rivers and lakes, with lettuces. They piled up more than 25kg of meat on a 1.8m hot pot and took the freshly cooked meat down to the boiled fish-bones soup on demand. A lot of visitors waited around to enjoy this treat on the first day of the festival.

People can also have a taste of Italy and sample the flavors of this international cuisine. This year this is the first time the festival has featured Italian food and they held an “Italian food week.” In the Italian Pavilion, authentic Italian delicacies are being displayed and served, including chocolate, chocolate cream, olive oil, coffee, canned food and gelato. It is worth mentioning that the handmade gelato from Carpigiani Gelato University, the only gelato university in the world, is being presented at the pavilion. In addition, catering enterprises from Germany, Norway and India are also taking part in the festival, and showcasing local foods and drinks, Norwegian seafood and Indian naan (bread).

Aside from all the delicious food, visitors can buy ingredients, souvenirs and snacks from domestic brands and abroad. More than 5,000 kinds of high quality imported food items from 150 countries and regions can be purchased at the festival, with favorable discounts.

The festival serves up delicious food, as well as entertainment. A carnival interaction area, equipped with a trampoline, allows visitors to bounce and jump while professional photographers on the scene take photos.

“This is a really good place to take friends or families to enjoy various foods and have some fun; I have been attending for many years,” said a local woman, Mrs. Zhang who invited her friends from Hunan Province and took her baby to join her for the food festival.

The food festival attracted almost 62,000 tourists on opening day and they spent about 4,712,000 yuan ($680,000), which breaks down to 76 yuan per person, according to the host of the event.
