The monument stands on the top of a red sand fortress by the Maotai ferry, which was the Red Army's main crossing point along the Chishui River in Maotai Town, in the early 1930's when the Red Army was on its strategic retreat, the Long March.

The monument stands on the top of a red sand fortress by the Maotai ferry, which was the Red Army's main crossing point along the Chishui River in Maotai Town, in the early 1930's when the Red Army was on its strategic retreat, the Long March.
