Security is a top priority for the Olympics, and Beijing has deployed nearly 110,000 personnel including police, army troops and volunteers to ensure safety.

Security measures are now visible around Olympic venues. Fences encircle all venues as well as the Olympic Village.

Monitoring and alarm facilities have been installed, and personnel and vehicle security checkpoints set up.

Beijing has also deployed ground-to-air defense missiles around the National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest.

The head of the security department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games says the measures are not so different from those taken by previous Olympic host cities.

Liu Shaowu, Director of BOCOG Security Department said "Deploying ground-to-air defense missiles is the usual practice that many Olympics host cities have adopted to ensure the safety of the games. When this equipment first appeared around the Bird's Nest, many local people were astonished. But we believe such a deployment is necessary."

The Chinese People's Liberation Army is also participating in the security efforts.

Combat aircraft, helicopters, warships, chemical defense equipment and radars will be used in case of security threats.

Beijing is also calling for the public to be active in ensuring the security of the Games by staying alert.
