US defense chief to act on Afghan civilian deaths

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the US military needs to do more to prevent the killing of ordinary Afghans caught up in military operations. The increasing number of civilian deaths in Afghanistan since early this year is raising doubts about the US military's security measures in the war-torn country.

Gates has visited Afghanistan to assure the Afghan public that the security situation is in control.
