London sells postcards to support young artists
Adjust font size:

Established British artists are contributing their talents to help in the development of the fine arts in Britain. Well-recognized artists have created post cards featuring their own work. The post cards are part of a giant art sale, assembled by students at the Royal College of Art. Proceeds from the sale will help to support talented fledgling artists in the U.K.

The Royal College of Art in London is hosting its fifteenth annual Secret Postcard exhibition and sale. Over two thousand seven hundred different fine-art postcards are on sale this year. They are the works of over a thousand-and-fifty artists.

Wihelmina Bunn, curator of RCA Secret Postcards, said, "It's a fundraising exhibition and invited artists contribute their work, and we sell it all for the same amount of money, forty pounds, and the secret is that all the work is signed on the back, so when you buy the work you can only identify it by a number, so you don't know who made it."

Many of the post cards come from current and former students of the RCA. Many now are famous artists. People choose the number of the card they like, make their purchase and discover which artist created it. The blind purchase makes the process unique and adds a note of mystery. Assembling the exhibition is a major task.
